In the world of painting, the preparation of the canvas is just as crucial as the act of painting itself. Among the materials that play a pivotal role in this preparatory stage, gesso stands out as a foundational element for many artists. Its application not only transforms the canvas but also significantly influences the painting process and the final artwork. In my own artistic journey, the use of gesso has been a game-changer, enhancing both the quality and the experience of my work. I used to barely prime the canvas with a thin coat of gesso, but struggled to paint with ease, as I wanted to lay down paint in a smooth manner without unsaturated portions of the canvas showing through. What is Gesso?

Gesso is a priming agent, traditionally a white paint mixture consisting of a binder mixed with chalk, gypsum, or from the Renaissance onwards, white pigment.
