The Sutter Buttes in Northern California hold the title of the world's smallest mountain range. They rise abruptly from the surrounding flat Sacramento Valley and are known for their distinctive volcanic origins. The Buttes are an ancient volcanic formation, with peaks that reach up to about 2,100 feet (640 meters). Their unique, isolated appearance and the surrounding agricultural landscape make them a fascinating geological feature and a beloved local landmark.
After completing several portrait commissions, I had the desire to paint a local landscape. The Sutter Buttes are special to me. They have been a backdrop for my life while growing up on the farm. For a time, the kids and I lived at the base of the Buttes in Sutter, California. They signal a welcome home after traveling out of the area.
When a friend showed me a sunset picture he took of the Sutter Buttes reflecting in the water of a nearby rice field, I knew I wanted to paint it! The picture has deep blue hues and is very saturated, with dramatic clouds in the sky above.
