A second commission for great friends
Roscoe

Art, friendship, and the unspoken bond we share with our pets; these elements recently intertwined in a project that was as meaningful to me. For nearly two decades, I worked alongside an individual, who has become a dear friend. Our journey together has transcended professional boundaries, allowing me to become acquainted with her family members, including the furry ones.

One of the latest pieces to emerge from my studio is a pastel drawing affectionately titled 'Gabby,' commissioned by the husband of my longtime coworker and friend. Capturing the essence of their beloved dog, who holds a special place in his heart, was a joy. But the story didn't end there. Touched by the portrayal of Gabby, he requested another piece—this time, a surprise drawing of Roscoe, the dog who shadows his wife with unwavering loyalty. This weekend, I had the pleasure of delivering this surprise, adding to their collection of furry family portraits. Witnessing her reaction to the artwork, a celebration of Roscoe's place in their lives, was a moment of pure joy.

My visit was more than just a delivery; it was a reunion of sorts, with the added fun of spending time with Roscoe, the star of my recent work. At nearly 14 years young, Roscoe exudes vitality, and it was fun to pet him in person after studying his face so intently in photos. The encounter was also an adventure for Hugo, my young heeler pup, who quickly learned that Roscoe, despite his age, still commands his space with the ease of a seasoned patriarch.

A note on my creative process: Embracing technology has helped to expedite my art process. The attached image reveals a side-by-side comparison of my source photo and the artwork in progress, facilitated by an app called Collageable. This tool allows me to meticulously analyze proportions, color, tone, and values, ensuring that each piece truly captures the spirit of its subject.

In art, as in life, the connections we forge—with people, with animals, with the world around us—shape our journey in profound ways. This project has been a beautiful reminder of that interconnectedness, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with you.
